If you don't feel the item(s) you get from a purchase aren't worth it (in any game, not just WoW) don't get it. (I probably wouldn't spend $10 on a petling, but if it was a really awesome looking pet maybe...) As long as said items aren't game changing in their nature I see no problem. Admittedly this assumes you are playing a subscription based MMOs. I've spent 10-15 bucks on bonus stuff before, by which I mean the CoH mini-boosters. Now tha tI have a job again I may even pick up the ones I delayed. Granted I think the costume pieces, emotes, and power are a bit better deal out of a booster then a pet, but still. Free MMOs need to make their money somewhere, they can sell game changers :P

All that being said, I get the irritation. You're already paying $15 a month to play the game, and then there are things on top of that they nickle and dime you with. I've bought extra character slots in the city (I'm up to about 30 on virtue, no I DON'T have a problem thank you very much ;p) and the aforementioned boosters and while sure it would have been great to get that all for free, these extras are also above and beyond what I was told I was getting when I paid my subscription fees. I expect my $15/month to pay for my access and 3 free content updates a year. If they want to give me more I certainly won't complain (it could be campy but I enjoyed the free comics I got for a while) but I don't expect the optional extras to be free.
