The Elder Gamer has a great, and oft linked to, story up on his blog about the profanity filter in Champions Online and how it has effected even NPC characters.

I've got to be honest and say that I did not even recognize that as a bug. I would see something like "Put that *%&*$ a box!" and think that some villain just demanded his henchmen kill me and burry me using some colorful language. The first time I saw it, I thought about going into the menu to find the profanity filter toggle and turn it off, but then I didn't even bother to look because I thought it was more interesting and funny that way. As it turns out, it's really just kind of sad.

See, what the NPC was suppose to say was "Put that hero in a box!" The filter blocks "hero in" because it thinks you're being clever and trying to talk about heroin. Ok… maybe I could see that. Well, except that we're in a SUPER HERO GAME!

This is going to now be one of those things that will pick at me that just didn't bother me until it was pointed out to me. It's like listening to your favorite musician with your boyfriend who then says "I hate the way his voices flips up at the end of every phrase." You never hated it before that moment, and probably even like it or at worst didn't notice it. But now you notice it every time it happens and it drives you wild! Yeah, this profanity filter in Champions Online will be just like that.

Ahh that reminds me of the profanity filter in Earth and Beyond. Of course since NPC chat was nonexistant to the best of my recollection it wasn't an issue for them. I think the one I saw teh most was several variations of the phrase "watch this" being partially censored because the word before watch had ended in a t.
