I've been pondering my like of Champions Online the past few days and really trying to understand why I like it, and I've come to the conclusion that I like it because it is fun. I know that is an astounding observation, but I can't think of another way to put it. I enjoy my time in the game, I enjoy the powers and the abilities and flying around the world, I have fun with the goofy nature of the game and I can do it all with gaiety. It's fun.
What brought me to questioning it is all the nay saying I've heard lately, which of course lead me to immediately start defending the game. But I had to pause at that point. Why should I have to defend the game? And what would I possibly gain from doing so? Further, would I even change anyone's opinion? Likely, nothing would change and I'd just look like another nerd-rager blogger. So, I'll just say this (again): Champions Online is a lot of fun. For me. Maybe not for you, but it is for me, so I'll keep playing it. Pretty simple, really.
Nope, it's not as deep as Fallen Earth, or as long and grindy as Aion, or as ubiquitous as WoW, but those are all things I kind of like about the title. Yes, it's borrowed liberally from other games (what MMO hasn't these days?), but for the most part things are well implemented. More content would be great, and a polishing of current mechanics (builds anyone?) would be nice, and it would be nice to have a more functional economy, but those things can be fixed. Hell, if WAR can fix itself in a year, I'm positive CO can too.
Will I be playing CO in a year? Who knows, but likely not. I don't stick with MMOs for that long. But I would encourage people to give it a shot this weekend. If you haven't heard, this weekend is a completely free weekend for everyone to play CO (Luigrein and Real Big Kitty, I'm looking at you). Just check out their site, get signed up and give it a shot for free. It's completely painless and only requires a few gigs of hard drive space that you can easily uninstall if you don't like it. The "weekend" is Friday to Monday, which is a pretty generous window.
Aside from their free week, you have the Blood Moon event that starts today (which you can participate in over the free weekend) and you have me to talk to in game! ;) So why not give it a shot? Hit me up in game @RainbowDickie if you do! (PS, fire builds are a blast!)
